Is It Selfish & Shallow To Focus On Money?

Money has been a big focus for me in the last several years now.

First it was because I left a “secure” job and was struggling financially in the start up phase of my business.

I thought about money all the time.

  • How would I get it?
  • When would it come?
  • Will I have enough?

And even deeper than that were the questions that came with the fear of perpetually being without it.

  • What if I’m not good enough to make money on my own?
  • What if people knew I struggled with money? Would they think I’m a fraud?

My relationship with money was wrought with anxiety and shame.

Now?

I love money!

In answer to the questions above, I can confidently say:

  • I know how to manifest it.
  • It will come when I need it.
  • I always have enough.
  • I am enough to make money on my own.
  • People do know I struggled with money. It’s a part of my journey. It helps me help more people.

Along the way, I’ve realized that one of the reasons I resisted money is that I didn’t want to be selfish and/or shallow by putting my focus there.

The irony is that I WAS being selfish and shallow, because without enough of it, I was more focused on myself and my finances than I wanted to be. I was in a “survival” mode, which places a limit on how much you can extend yourself to others.

Wow, that was a wake up call.

I’m here to radically change the world. And, how am I going to do that if I’m struggling with money?!

Ok. I got it. I want to make lots of money to help change the world!

That’s when I knew it was not selfish and shallow for me to focus on it. I am clear on my values and vision. I claim what money means to me and how I am a steward for it.

When I look around at the state of the world and the problems that we need to resolve to create a better place for all, I definitely can see how money is at the center of it.

Power-over. Greed. War.

All have a connection with money.

And look at your own life. Is there not any area that is touched by it in some way?

Yes, I believe money is KEY to our freedom.

Now, let me clarify something here.

There might be a part of you that’s saying, “What?! You think money is the answer to our problems?”

Absolutely not. Absolutely yes.

No, it is not just a matter of simply making more and throwing money at our problems. No, money is not going make it all ok. (One of the biggest myths.)

Yes, it is a matter of recognizing that we’ve got this money game ALL wrong and it’s time to change it.

Money is not about money.

It’s about the meaning we give it.

It’s about what we think it will do for us.

It’s about the experience that we believe it will bring us.

This article could get really long cuz I’ve got lots to say about this topic (surprise, surprise).

So, I’ll break it down and end with this.

  1. Money is not about money.
  2. Money means what we choose it to mean.
  3. Focusing on money for old paradigm values like perceived power and authority, false sense of security, greed and filling the void DOES make it shallow and selfish.
  4. Focusing on money for new paradigm values like authentic power and purpose expressed, exchange of value that enhances life, generous giving that distributes among all and effective translation of energy into experiences that help us flourish DOESN’T make it shallow and selfish.

Bottom line, in my new world, it’s not selfish or shallow to focus on money.

And I tell you what, I’m honored to be part of leading the new way so that we re-connect with our true wealth together.

What do YOU think?

Yes! I love that – new paradigm values. It’s a very powerful time right now as we transition from old to new, from five sensory to multi-sensory. Lots going on! All the best to you.
